What The Press Is Saying...:Variety - ...trains polyglot focus on odd and obscure shorts, performance videos, works made for tv and out-of-genre efforts-... SF Film & Video Arts Commission - Formerly known as the Cacophony Society Drive-In Film Festival, now presenting "odd and obscure independent shorts..." East Bay Express - ..Dave Krzysik's...showcase of movies no one else would screen begins tonight with the Brainwash Television Pilot, a best-of collection (The Sex Life of the Chair...)...a cornucopia of nuttiness including Jeff Warmouth's Il Spaghetti Occidental(sic)... SF Weekly - ..The films are usually short - created by artists, activists, and independent filmmakers-and chosen from among copious submissions... Bay Guardian -...showcases...fringe shorts...by local and international filmmakers. You can view a motley assortment of dramas, comedies, and the bizarre, including animation...Brainwash founder Dave Krzysik tells me his theory and impetus for producing the venerable, left-of-center short film fest: space aliens live among us, making and analyzing film, and mining us humans for ideas for their own planets' television shows. "They might be bored with their TV fare, too," he insists. So he acts as the fast track to quality, alien entertainment, as it were. ... With few exceptions, the films are indeed some of the most resourceful, inspiring, and clever I've ever seen. ... The Sex Life of the Chair proves that stoners sometimes translate their skewed thoughts into film ...One wonders why short films are usually the most inventive. Probably because truly smart people, in film as well as in other art fields, don't get the major funding that more palatable and lowest-common-denominator hacks do, and can therefore only see bits and pieces of their vision realized at a time. It's a shame. So, aliens, if you're reading this, stay away from the theaters for the next few weeks, and send money. Film Threat -...I often marvel at how people can still come up with a film event different enough to compete in this saturated market. ...Brainwash has proven to be quite long-lasting...Sex Life of a (sic) Chair: A Bill Plympton-esque piece of animation which details the mating and procreation rituals of household furniture. ... Arizona Daily Star -...wild and woolly avant-garde video shorts. ... San Francisco Chronicle - ...Formerly known as the Cacophony Society Drive-In Festival, this is the place...for really independent films and videos. The International Film Association -Xaos Tools does impressive bookends for...pilot. ... The pilot for the proposed program called Brainwash features interviews,...and unusal visuals. ...CONGRATULATIONS TO BRAINWASH ON AN EXCELLENT TV PILOT Ed Holmes from the SF Mime Troupe is an excellent host, their transfer of Billy Greene's Thought Bubble looks great and the rest of the show is well picked. ... NY Times -...In the mid-90's, cultural pranksters like David Krzysik, who runs the annual Brainwash Movie Festival in Oakland, Calif., experimented with replicating the ambience of old drive-ins, organizing movie showings in empty lots and open-air art spaces. ... In cities like Tampa, Fla., and West Chester, Pa., as well as Santa Cruz (CA), people are pirating a piece of that old Hollywood magic and challenging conventions on the role of public space in the process. ...logged onto www.squidlist.com, the local Web clearinghouse for subversive culture ... |
